I was born and raised in Zimbabwe and now live in Harare the capital city of Zimbabwe. I qualified as a radiographer and worked for many years in hospitals in Zimbabwe and the UK but my heart was always in the wilds of Africa. 26 years ago a great friend and well known professional guide gave me the opportunity to run his company. Subsequently Victoria and I were given the opportunity to buy the company, which has now gone from strength to strength.

My passion is nature and wildlife photography and I have been lucky enough to have travelled extensively,  visiting Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Namibia, Mozambique, Botswana, Zambia and South Africa.

Each of these countries offers such a variety of unique scenery and wildlife experiences, and a few of my memorable experiences include the famous migration in Tanzania; following a leopard for a whole day in Botswana while she set up for a hunt; canoeing  on the Lower Zambezi River; quietly being accepted by a pack of wild dog and sitting with them for the day and walking with a bull elephant in Mana as he went about his business of drinking and feeding. These are the experiences that Africa can offer.

When I am looking to travel to a new wonderful wildlife destination, I look for the best country and national park that will offer the experience I am looking for and then I try and find small intimate camps, with excellent guides that will offer great wildlife or cultural experiences that fit my brief.

One of my great pleasures is to discover these camps and enjoy some of the famous parks and archipelagos of Southern and East Africa. I would love to extend my knowledge to you and show you some of the magic of Africa. It would be my honor to take you on a journey that lives up to your dreams and expectations!

My love of the bush all started when I was very young and would visit all the surrounding Zimbabwean National parks with my parents. It was when  I left school – I knew I had to go to the bush to train as a guide in Hwange National Park, it was during this time that I took on the dual role of guiding as well as day to day logistics of a safari camp.  I went on to travel Europe, Australia North America and Asia. But the lure of Africa was too great and returned back to the safari lodges in Matusadona (Kariba) and Mana Pools. It was in 1999, that I bought into a destination management company together with my business partner Gwen.

Being a horse rider and keen wildlife enthusiast, one of my most favourite experiences would be Okavango Delta, known for its extreme contrasting beauty. It not only caters for the keen horse rider, but for those who just want to experience the unique mokoro trip through the quiet waters of the Delta, as well as enjoy safaris in 4 x 4 vehicles or even walking though the varied ecosystems found in the Moremi National Park.

One of my most favourite camps in Zimbabwe is Chilo Gorge Safari lodge – bordering  the Gonarezhou National  Park, purely for its remoteness and enjoying area’s less “trodden”.  In addition to the varied wildlife in this area, it is here I love  seeing Giraffe, their grace and weird agility in the bush astounds me.  Odd as it may seem but the humble baboon is probably my next most favourite animal- their antics amuse and fascinate me.

My objective when starting any safari planning is to find out your most particular interests together with your budget and preferred places of interest, from there on it is just a matter of planning a memorable and exciting safari that suits you.

Jan Safaris 4 Africa

Jan Hounsell

I have worked in the travel industry for the last 30 years and have also travelled to many countries in the world.  The travel bug set in after leaving college and took me to the States, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.  I have worked for airlines, run safari camps and worked for numerous travel agencies so you could say I have a “well-rounded” view of travel planning. After enjoying a stint living in Mauritius and enjoying the island life,  my family and I moved back to Harare 11 years ago and I have been working with Safaris 4 Africa since then.

If I had to choose I would say Somalisa Camp in Hwange.  I originally went there in 2008 with my family.  Hard times in Zimbabwe then, but we had the most amazing time there, from the food, guides, hosts and an interesting episode with a black mamba!

A very close runner up would be Elephant Camp in Victoria Falls.  A very romantic camp and a perfect place to just relax and enjoy the scenery.

As I have a family, I love organizing family holidays.  I feel there is so much to learn about the bush and animals, so for children to be able to get an insight as to how even the smallest insect can play such a major role in the whole eco system.

My greatest joy though is getting feedback from clients after they have had an amazing holiday experience. That is my aim is to ensure whoever I book on a holiday, is that they have the best and most memorable holiday ever and hopefully they will return again.

“We had a wonderful time - thank you so much! We saw 4 out of the big 5 and much more. But what made it special were the people. Each camp was different but in each place they were extremely hospitable. All well-organized so we would be happy to recommend you to other friends who might decide to come to Africa.”

Greg and Maggie Crichton, Hong Kong

“Thank you - we are singing your praises back home. I am sure we have convinced a lot of friends to visit Africa and I have passed on your details. I think when we organised this trip, we were thinking this is a once in a life time trip. NO way, we will definitely be back!”

Karen and David Sefton, Australia

“Our family booked the trip of a lifetime through Gwen at safaris 4 Africa, who came highly recommended through friends in Zimbabwe. We felt we got to know the real Africa because Gwen knows it so well. Gwen's recommendations and organisation gave us the most amazing experiences that we'll treasure forever - no wonder people who live there recommend her so highly.”

Jennie Jones, Australia

"We had an unforgettable trip, covering Zimbabwe and the Okavango Delta in Botswana, thanks to the dedicated, efficient, and comprehensive service of Gwen and the team at Safaris 4 Africa! From the accommodation bookings, food requirements, transfers and travel information, every detail was well-planned and organised to the last! Thank you, and we look forward to our next time away with you!"
